Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I get the free preview and bonus materials?
A: You can subscribe to these items using the form at the bottom of each product detail page. Simply enter in your name and email address along with answer a few questions. Your information is captured by my automated system which immediately begins the delivery process. Check your email to confirm this delivery. Your information is safe and secure and cannot be shared, rented or sold. You can remove yourself from my system automatically by simply following the unsubscribe link at the bottom of each message you receive. That's it!

The free materials are in a downloadable, digital format which is compatible with any and all computers. No tangible items are part of this free offer. No physical mailing address or payment information is required. There's no obligation to buy anything.

Q: Is your website secure?
A: Yes, I use 1ShoppingCart.com to handle all of my orders, deliver my digital products and manage my client database including subscribers to my mailing list and free materials. In addition, credit/debit cards are processed using the Authorize.net gateway (you can choose PayPal if you prefer).

Q: Is Fretboard Theory good for beginners?
A: Not if you're starting from scratch. Absolute beginners click here.

Q: What do I need to know before studying Fretboard Theory?
A: You should know all the basic open chords such as E, Em, F, G, A, Am, B7, C, D, Dm. You should know some common barre chords or power chords. You should have experience playing simple melodies and/or riffs. Finally, you should have lots of experience playing songs.

Q: Is Fretboard Theory applicable to both acoustic and electric guitar?
A: Yes, acoustic and electric guitar fretboards are identical. You'll only find differences in guitar types when it comes to technique which Fretboard Theory is not about. Nearly half the songs referenced are acoustic.

Q: Can Bass Players Benefit Too?
A: Yes, this book is full of relevant information for bass playing. Since bass strings E, A, D, and G are tuned exactly one octave lower than the respective guitar strings, and because the scale patterns and chord shapes on these four strings are the same on both instruments, bassists can play and learn from guitar examples just fine. There's a considerable amount of references to bass songs too.

Q: Will Fretboard Theory teach me songs?
A: No, but it does include lots of details about popular songs that are helpful. Fretboard Theory is not a songbook but rather a study of the theory behind songs. For example, what scales are used and why, etc. It includes hundreds of references to and descriptions of popular songs but not actual notation or specific instruction on them. On the other hand, the free materials I give away includes some actual TAB.

Q: Do I have to read music?
A:
No, and Fretboard Theory won’t cover reading standard musical notation but it does include it in some examples for those that want it. Also, some formal vocabulary, traditional terms and outdated concepts have been purposely omitted.

Q: What is an e-book and how does it work?
A: An e-book is a digital file viewable on your computer. Specifically, the file format is known as a PDF which is compatible with any and all computers (the free 25 page preview I give away is a PDF).

The e-book is identical to the regular printed and bound version of the book. Choice is simply a matter of budget and preference. E-books can be downloaded immediately after your payment is accepted. Regular books have to be mailed.

When you place an order that includes a digital product, you'll receive the download link in an email message immediately after your payment has been accepted. Once downloaded the PDF file stays on your hard drive and is yours to keep. Make sure you pay attention to where you save it to. Feel free to back the file up on disk. Also, you are free to print and bind a copy of your e-book or have a professional printer do it for you.

Q: What is a hardcopy?
A: A hardcopy is a printed and bound 9x12 book. It's spiral bound with a soft, color cover.

Q: Does Fretboard Theory include a CD?
A: No, but the free materials I give away include some MP3s which you can listen to online.

Q: Is Fretboard Theory available on DVD?
A: Yes, four chapters from Fretboard Theory are available on DVD. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to learn more about them. For a full theory course, I recommend getting Fretboard Theory as 7 out of its 11 chapters are only available in the book. This information is necessary to fill the gaps not covered in the videos.

Q: Can I order outside the U.S.A.?
A: Yes, orders are accepted from anywhere in the world. Credit/debit cards are processed by Authorize.net or you can use PayPal. Mail order is also available. Visit the order page.

Q: Can I order by mail?
